Pew survey shows most Americans now oppose animal experimentation

A new Pew research survey conducted this spring revealed that the majority of Americans—52%—oppose the use of animals in scientific research. This number is up from the 43% of individuals who held that belief in 2009 and is validation of the work NAVS and supporters like you have undertaken over the years to increase awareness and change attitudes toward animal experimentation.

Conversely, the percentage of individuals who favor the practice of animal use in scientific research has decreased, from 52% in 2009 to 47% in 2018.

These findings are consistent with overall trends reported in recent Gallup polls which have shown decreasing levels of support for medical testing on animals since Gallup began polling on the issue in 2001. In 2018, 54% of Americans view medical testing on animals as “morally acceptable,” down from 65% in 2001.  Accordingly, the percentage of individuals who view medical testing on animals as “morally wrong” increased, from 26% in 2001 to 43% in 2018.

This is not only great news for animals, but evidence of the effectiveness of NAVS’ efforts—including our funding of cutting-edge research through the International Foundation for Ethical Research, our recognition of high school students who advance humane science at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, and our ongoing efforts to ensure that research animals have the opportunity for lives after the labs. Our positive, effective solutions to replace cruel, costly and flawed animal experiments with humane, innovative methods of research are working.

Although the animals used in medical research do not have a voice, we do! Please visit the NAVS’ Advocacy Center where you can lend your voice in support of important, animal-friendly legislation, including the Humane Cosmetics Act, the BEST Practices Act and the PUPPERS Act.  Help us continue to be the voice for the voiceless and ensure that we continue the momentum to end animal experimentation.

Also, please consider making a donation today so that we can continue to change minds and expand our vital work to end the exploitation of animals used in science.
