NAVS’ Statement Regarding COVID-19

Dear Friends of NAVS,

The COVID-19 pandemic affects all us in ways large and small, and the situation continues to evolve daily. With that in mind, I wanted to take just a moment to let you know how we at NAVS have adapted and responded to the challenges.

Though NAVS’ physical office in downtown Chicago has closed for the time being, our work on behalf of animals continues. The technology we have in place allows us to remain seamlessly connected to each other and to you. We have implemented no lay-offs—the entire NAVS team is working remotely to further our humane mission and to keep you, our dedicated supporters, informed throughout this period.

Now is not the time for us to ease up on our 90+ year commitment to ending the use of animals in research—in fact, in many ways the circumstances in which we now find ourselves actually reinforce the need to move away from these flawed methodologies. To that end, we are encouraged to see some researchers looking for ways to bypass animal tests and move a potential coronavirus vaccine directly to human trials, acknowledging both the urgency of the situation and the inherent limitations present in animal models.

We will be anxious to see the scientific results of this movement, which may lead to an easing in the use of animals. In the meantime, know that we are continuing our work while keeping our staff safe.

I wish you good health and I thank you for your support and trust in NAVS.

Kenneth Kandaras,
Executive Director
