[ADDRESS]

Dear [SALUTATION, LAST NAME],

It has recently come to my attention that [SCHOOL NAME] does not have a formal policy guaranteeing students the right to a humane alternative to dissection. Since there are many reasons a Student Choice Policy would benefit [SCHOOL NAME] and its students, I am requesting that a policy be adopted immediately.

A study of life sciences should instill a sense of wonder and respect for living, sentient creatures who are part of a complex web of life; creatures with their own behaviors, life history patterns and relationships within an ecosystem. Dissection instills a view that animal life is expendable and unimportant while promoting desensitization toward animal suffering, a serious consideration given the growing recognition of a link between violence against animals and violence against humans.

Dissection also poses serious health risks from exposure through skin contact or inhalation of fumes from hazardous chemicals like formaldehyde, a chemical preservative linked to cancer of the throat, lungs and nasal passages.  The use of these harmful chemicals can also pose potential harm to the environment if disposed of improperly. Non-animal alternatives are better for the environment, ecosystems, and are more cost-effective over time because there is no need to replenish once-live animals.

And if animal suffering, desensitization to violence, human health risks, and environmental damage are not sufficient reasons to object to dissection, one can add that it is simply not necessary.  Recent studies have shown that performance scores of students who have used humane alternatives equal or surpass the test scores of students who have participated in dissection.

[SALUTATION, LAST NAME], please consider the benefits that can come from adopting a Student Choice Policy at [SCHOOL NAME] and let me know if you need additional information, such as how to borrow alternatives to dissection – including models, computer software, and videos – FREE OF CHARGE. I look forward to hearing from you by [DATE] to further discuss [SCHOOL NAME]’s Student Choice Policy.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME/ ORGANIZATION]
